Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday in September, creating a long weekend. The very first Labor Day holiday was celebrated here in New York City in 1882. The United States declared it a national holiday in 1894. The holiday is now also celebrated in Canada and a number of other countries, often on different dates. (It is spelled "Labour Day" in most other English-speaking countries.)
Labor Day was created by the American labor movement to celebrate the contributions that workers have made to the strength and prosperity of the United States.
Labor Day also marks the official end of summer. Many people take advantage of the long holiday weekend to take a last vacation or to enjoy outdoor activities.
Many schools begin classes right after Labor Day. There is a sense that the summer period of relaxation and renewal has come to an end and that one feels ready to face new challenges and move ahead. At Confident Speech, many of our clients are especially motivated to start a program of speech instruction after Labor Day!
