Independence Day

fireworksIndependence Day, also known as "the Fourth of July," is a uniquely American holiday.  Here are the quick facts!  Independence Day commemorates the date (July 4, 1776) when the founders of the United States signed the Declaration of Independence.  This represents the birth of the United States.  The new country had been a colony of England.

Government offices and many businesses are closed on this holiday, but stores and restaurants remain open.  If July 4 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, businesses and offices usually observe by closing on either Friday or Monday.   Frequently, people combine the days between July 4 and the nearest Saturday and Sunday to make a "long weekend."  It is a favorite time to travel.

Because the holiday occurs during the summer, Independence Day is often celebrated outdoors. Many people invite friends and family for a picnic or barbecue.  On the night of July 4, many towns and cities have a public display of fireworks.  However, in most places, it is illegal for private citizens to buy and explode fireworks.
